Turkey is alone in this game but all Europe and NATO support Greece, says Greek PM

On September 27, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that Turkey “can monotonously continue its lies and threats, but it is alone in this game,” referring to the claims of Turkey about the militarization of Aegean islands with non-military status by the Greek army. Turkey released drone footages showing the Greek army deployed armored vehicles to the Aegean islands.

After the release of this footage, Turkish President Erdogan said, “Support from the US and Europe will not save you.” Erdogan claims that Greece’s acts on the Aegean islands are against international law. He also said that Greece trusts on the support of the US and the Greek army deployed armored vehicles sent by the US to the Port of Alexandroupolis to the Aegean islands.

Erdogan said, “As Turkey, we want peace with all our hearts. We want stability and security in our region along with our own homeland. We want to resolve our disagreements on the basis of international law, in an equitable manner, through dialogue.”

After Erdogan’s statements, Greek PM Mitsotakis said “The other side (Turkey) can monotonously continue its lies and threats, but it is alone in this game. They are not just going against Greece, they have Europe in its entirety and our allies at NATO to contend with,” in a cabinet meeting.

Mitsotakis said that Erdogan’s statements are “unacceptable” and Erdogan has been using “nationalism” and “increased tensions” before the upcoming presidential elections in Turkey in 2023.

The Aegean islands were given to Greece by Italy under the 1923 and 1947 treaties on the condition that it does not arm the islands.
